Revamping Bitlog's Warehouse Management System: A Case Study

Bitlog is a company based in Sweden that provides innovative supply-chain and logistics solutions to customers worldwide. Their key product is a digital warehouse management system designed to increase productivity and automate logistics operations. Bitlog's primary goal was to develop a smart warehouse management solution that would help logistics companies automate their daily operations and increase efficiency. They sought a technology partner that could enhance their existing product and develop functional iOS applications in cooperation with their onsite team.

Bitlog, a Sweden-based company delivering innovative supply-chain and logistics solutions, was faced with the challenge of extending the functionality of their warehouse management system (WMS). They needed to improve the user experience and develop mobile applications for iOS devices. The task was complex due to the intricate business logic of warehouse management, which required a deep understanding of warehouse workflows, stock control, product movement, picking operations, and space utilization. The WMS comprised over 10 modules with complex logic and user scenarios, necessitating the development of multiple workflows for warehouse operators and managers. The team also had to develop different modules for managers and drivers for the Transportation Management System (TMS) application.

N-iX, a technology partner, was brought on board to enhance Bitlog's existing product and develop functional iOS applications. The team started by maintaining the original iPad version of the WMS, then developed a new WMS version for iPhone with extended functionality and a new UI/UX design. They also developed applications for Apple Watch and Apple TV to provide a more controlled view of warehouse operations. A key feature added was the Media Manager, which allowed for photos of stocked products to be taken and automatically synchronized between the local server and the phone. This provided users with full control of the products available in the warehouse and constant access to the photos both online and offline. Additionally, a modern transportation management system was developed, enabling managers to scan barcodes on parcels and load carriers, track delivery status and location, and allowing drivers to track goods and find delivery points.

The new system not only extended the functionality of the original WMS but also introduced new features such as the Media Manager and a modern transportation management system. The redesigned system was rigorously tested to ensure flawless operation. The team's understanding of warehouse workflows and processes allowed them to develop a solution that automated various operations, from planning and credit control to manual distribution. The new system also provided a solution for analyzing statistical data on inventory, orders, locations, equipment, and major processes in warehouses. The successful implementation of these solutions has significantly increased the efficiency of Bitlog’s users.
