Aker Solutions
About The Customer
Aker Solutions is a world leader in providing subsea production control systems for the oil and gas industry. Since delivering its first subsea electro-hydraulic control system in 1975, the company has developed and deployed more than 1,500 systems worldwide, using state-of-the-art technologies and an in-depth knowledge and experience of subsea systems. Aker Solutions provides oilfield products, systems, and services for customers in the oil and gas industry worldwide. The company's knowledge and technologies span from reservoir to production and through the life of a field. Aker Solutions employs approximately 28,000 people in more than 30 countries.
The Challenge
Aker Solutions, a global leader in providing subsea production control systems for the oil and gas industry, was facing a challenge with the increasing sophistication of its products and control technologies. The offshore oil and gas production environment is one of the most demanding engineering environments, and the rising complexity of Aker's products was creating a growing need to store, manipulate, and share data across networks of devices located on the seabed, on production platforms, and onshore. To meet the demands of future product generations, Aker Solutions identified the need for a new database management system that could handle high volumes of data, be compatible with embedded and conventional systems, and maintain data integrity in the offshore environment where communication links may suffer disruption and interruption.
The Solution
After a thorough search and testing of numerous systems, Aker Solutions selected Raima's RDM Embedded as a core element of its future offshore control technologies. Raima Database Manager (RDM) is optimized for embedded, real-time, in-memory, and mobile applications. It provides flexible and reliable solutions for collecting and storing large volumes of data, offers intuitive methods for managing and navigating through information quickly, and enables data to be moved in real-time. RDM provides software developers with a wide variety of powerful programming tools and customizable building blocks that enable them to solve the most complex data management challenges. The new release of RDM has extended functionality, improved performance, and enhanced ease of use, making it an ideal solution for Aker Solutions' needs.

Remote Wellhead Monitoring
Each wellhead was equipped with various sensors and meters that needed to be monitored and controlled from a central HMI, often miles away from the assets in the field. Redundant solar and wind generators were installed at each wellhead to support the electrical needs of the pumpstations, temperature meters, cameras, and cellular modules. In addition to asset management and remote control capabilities, data logging for remote surveillance and alarm notifications was a key demand from the customer. Terra Ferma’s solution needed to be power efficient, reliable, and capable of supporting high-bandwidth data-feeds. They needed a multi-link cellular connection to a central server that sustained reliable and redundant monitoring and control of flow meters, temperature sensors, power supply, and event-logging; including video and image files. This open-standard network needed to interface with the existing SCADA and proprietary network management software.

Energy Saving & Power Monitoring System
Recently a university in Taiwan was experiencing dramatic power usage increases due to its growing number of campus buildings and students. Aiming to analyze their power consumption and increase their power efficiency across 52 buildings, the university wanted to build a power management system utilizing web-based hardware and software. With these goals in mind, they contacted Advantech to help them develop their system and provide them with the means to save energy in the years to come.

Refinery Saves Over $700,000 with Smart Wireless
One of the largest petroleum refineries in the world is equipped to refine various types of crude oil and manufacture various grades of fuel from motor gasoline to Aviation Turbine Fuel. Due to wear and tear, eight hydrogen valves in each refinery were leaking, and each cost $1800 per ton of hydrogen vented. The plant also had leakage on nearly 30 flare control hydrocarbon valves. The refinery wanted a continuous, online monitoring system that could catch leaks early, minimize hydrogen and hydrocarbon production losses, and improve safety for maintenance.
