About The Customer
Moonshadow Mobile is an independent online visualization technology company based in Eugene, Oregon. The company provides high-speed geospatial visualization-as–a-service to power mobile and desktop information mapping applications for political campaigns, governments, and businesses of all sizes. This capability allows political field teams to pull in robust address-by-address voter data for VoterMapping.com, the leading provider of registered voter data and analysis tools for major political campaigns. The company’s proprietary database crams 200 million records with up to 1,000 attributes per record into a 12 gigabyte database while delivering data to end users in less than one- fifth of a second.
The Challenge
Moonshadow Mobile needed an infrastructure that could allow it to deliver highly detailed geospatial data in online mapping applications in near real time for a highly demanding customer base paying big bucks for unique applications. The company offers over 200 real-time web and mobile applications for customers and delivers population data in numerous ways and forms. The challenge is that usage is variable. So if you don’t have to over-provision servers for massive spikes in usage but still maintain performance, you will save a lot of money. Moonshadow also wanted high-speed internal networks to push huge volumes of data between the database and the application networks as well as a way to easily distribute its workloads across multiple application servers to ensure customers always got fast response times via the Internet.
The Solution
Moonshadow’s technology team approached Joyent because they had heard that it delivered excellent Node.js tools and performance. Moonshadow continued to test out other major cloud providers but found none of them could handle their data-intensive web and mobile application requirements. Joyent gave Moonshadow a much faster internal network and they delivered consistent high-performance compute as well as great engineering support, and help with customization. The Moonshadow team moved its entire application infrastructure to Joyent to take advantage of Low-Latency Node.js Application Environment, Expert and Responsive Solutions Engineering, Rapid, Reliable Scalability, and Lower Total Cost of Ownership.
